In 2004 we made the design for a penthouse at IJburg, the suburban development in the IJmeer as part of Amsterdam. The profession of our client, DJ Jean, created specific conditions for the concept of the apartment.
Working during the night and sleeping during the day creates the day and night rhythm has been permanently switched. Evenly distributed main light plan and lighted panels along two walls create his day feeling during the night. A block out system in the windows creates his night feeling during the day.
The planned penthouse we changed from a 5-room apartment to a loft.
Functions like toilet, kitchen, fireplace and cupboards and vestibule are placed in a way to hide the construction walls. Resulting the penthouse to look like a big loft with some elements in. Both ends of the house are covered with translucent panels to hide the standard housing windows. Thus the relation of the penthouse with a standard structure of housing has totally disappeared.
