SPLIT BUILDING

SPLIT BUILDING

Kings Cross

In 2003 we designed a Tapas-club at Caledonian Road, near Kings Cross, London. The development of the Eurostar station on Kings Cross, which will give London direct access to Paris and Brussels, is boosting the development of the neighbourhood Kings Cross to a highly qualified area with retail, restaurants, leisure, office and residential space. Hart of these developments is Regents Quarter, in between Kings Cross and Caledonian Road.

Two naves and two floors

The building on Caledonian Road is part of a line of buildings with a high part on ground floor on the street and apartments on top. Behind the high entrance space in two naves, two big halls are situated on two floors with a split-level connection to the front space.

One entrance, two hearts

Connecting the upper day hall via a slow staircase along the left nave and the lower night hall with a slow staircase along the right nave, the front space connects the two hearts of the club.

A double loop

By a shortcut connecting the lounge upstairs and the toilets in the cellar there is a continuous circulation routing, a double loop: the circuit never stops. Giving a sense of openness, freedom and safety.
