This is a design for serial farm house construction with single-family homes on the Noordelijke Dwarsweg in Zevenhuizen. At this moment it is situated in a rural area. A shop in an existing greenhouse is occupying the site.
The area has been developed in 1000 years from peat-moor to farmland, to meadowland, to peat extraction resulting in an inland sea for several centuries, to pump out, to farm- and meadowland, to greenhouse industry, and at this moment to urbanisation. The site is incorporated in the urban plan Zuidplas-West, a plan to transform this rural area into a residential area. Intention for this specific area is to keep this part recognisable and distinctive, to retain ‘the memory of the polder’.
The lay-out with six zones is filled in with six types: house, stable, shed, barn, haystack and mill, which are inspired by the history of farming, cattle breeding, peat extraction and impoldering.
A concrete structure on ground floor, a floating first floor with crossed wooden beams and all upper floors constructed of cross layer wood are the main construction themes of the house.
Grateful to the history of the location the brick walls will be constructed out of bricks as a replica of peat blocks. The wooden facades and the cane facades and roofs show an authentic rural and historical image. The big glass windows lift the houses into the 21 Century.
Due to the specific typologies of the houses, all the floor plans are more than surprising, no standard solution presents itself. The six types of farm buildings all have their own special layout.
The big semi-detached houses are set up with a front door on the front facade and a front door on the side facade. This makes the semi-detached house look like one large house with a front door and a back door.
All floor plans are mirrored backwards in relation to each other. On the front facade, all functions and rooms are visible, spread over two houses. This also makes the semi-detached house look like one large house.
The floor plans of the barn are mirrored backwards in relation to each other. On the front facade, all functions and rooms are visible, spread over two houses. This prevents symmetry and monotony. The ground floor is half mirrored to allow for differentiation in an entrance with a smaller stable door and an entrance with a big barn door. On both ends of the barn, the ground floor has been manipulated extra to allow for a house with a side entrance.
